Given the growing disruption caused by the COVID-19 virus crisis — in addition to the increased sensitivity to air travel and the carbon footprint of conferences — we see the increasing importance of virtual community interaction and virtual events.

Although virtual events have been around for over 40 years, we are still asking basic questions:
- How do we ensure that virtual collaborative design and facilitation are done effectively?
- What are the emerging tools and methods?
- How do we ensure presence and focus in a distracted, non-physical environment?
- How do we design virtual interactions that maintain human emotion and build empathy and trust?
