Emergent Design. What Does It Mean?

In mid-2013, The Value Web was invited to contribute our expertise to a book project entitled The Collaboratory.

The book’s purpose was to inspire people to use collaborative approaches in solving complex problems at any level—from local to global.

The book’s editor, Katrin Muff, Dean of the Business School of Lausanne, contacted The Value Web in hopes we would share our expertise at facilitating stakeholder dialogue in international settings such as the World Economic Forum. As she learned more about our work, her interest in our contribution expanded to include the design and facilitation of co-creative stakeholder engagement processes for group transformation.

In November 2013, a group of Value Web members gathered at Housatonic Studios in   Bologna to develop the material for the book. Aaron Williamson, Alicia Bramlett, Bill Burck, Gregoire Serikoff, Patrick Frick, and Svenja Ruger synthesized their insight to produce the material that was ultimately submitted in early 2014. A portion of that manuscript was selected to serve as the book’s introduction.

In addition, Value Web member Alfredo Carlo of Housatonic Studio designed the book’s cover and contributed a number of illustrations that enhance the book’s text, while Paul Poleman of Unilever wrote the foreword of the book.

The Collaboratory was published in June 2014 and is available from Greenleaf Publishing at the list price of £25.
