Emergent Design. What Does It Mean?

A small italian portion of The Value Web designed and facilitated a workshop in the heart of L’Aquila, a beautiful town in the center of Italy strongly damaged by a huge earthquake in May 2009.

Every street and in particular the historic center of L’Aquila are completely changed and destroyed, most of it is even closed to the public transfer.

A big portion of the citizens left the town and are now waiting to understand what will come next.

AIAP the Italian Association of Design, is running a project in partnership with the town administration, to design a new map and new signs reflecting the current situation. The participants of the workshop, that had as the main objective to set the next steps of the project and define the team that will work on it, were coming from all over Italy and from different backgrounds: designers, graphic designers, artists, psychologists, architects. The variety of backgrounds and the engagement of the participants created the start of an exiting project that will have an impact on both the citizens daily life and the way design can support in many different ways even in extreme situation.
