Immature product teams make the same mistake: They want users to understand their products but refuse to understand their users.” ― Mario Maruffi

What is the Client Discovery Process?

The Client Discovery process is a crucial step in any consulting engagement. It involves gathering comprehensive information about the client, their business, and their goals. This process lays the foundation for building strong relationships, understanding client needs, and developing effective solutions. By conducting a thorough client discovery process, designers can gain a deep understanding of their client’s challenges and opportunities, enabling them to deliver tailored solutions that drive results.

Key Questions to Ask During the Client Discovery Process:

  • What are your organisation’s long-term goals and objectives?

  • Can you provide insights into your company’s history and culture?

  • What are the main challenges and pain points your organisation is currently facing?

  • How do you measure success in your business?

  • What specific outcomes are you looking to achieve through this engagement?

  • Who are your target stakeholders, and what are their needs and preferences?

  • How does your organisation currently handle this specific area of concern?

  • What resources (budget, workforce, technology) are available for this project?

  • What are your expectations regarding the consulting/facilitation team’s role and involvement?

  • How do you prefer to communicate and collaborate throughout the engagement?

Challenges and Pitfalls to Watch Out For:

  • Inadequate research and preparation can lead to missing crucial information.

  • Lack of active listening skills may result in misinterpreting client needs.

  • Failing to ask probing questions can result in an incomplete understanding of the client’s challenges.

  • Overpromising or setting unrealistic expectations can lead to dissatisfaction.

  • Poor communication can cause misunderstandings and delays in the discovery process.

  • Ignoring non-verbal cues and signals may result in overlooking critical information.

  • Bias or preconceived notions can hinder objectively assessing the client’s situation.

  • More documentation and record-keeping can lead to gaps in understanding later on.

  • Overlooking key stakeholders or decision-makers can undermine the engagement’s success.

  • The inability to adapt and pivot based on new information can result in outdated solutions.

Join our workshop to understand these challenges better and learn practical strategies to overcome them. Don’t miss this opportunity to refine your skills and become a master of the client discovery process.
